The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Wednesday, April 2, 1930 Atlantic Ocean Smooth sailing today but not much sunshine, the sky is grey and cloudy. I was so anxious to see the Rock of Gibraltar but the captain announces we will pass it about three or four in the morning. How sad, it would be impossible to get a good view at that hour even if we should get up. The long delayed “Raffle” was held at last, we both attended but since the whole program was in French, we were not much wiser when it was over.

Took all the time I wanted this morning. 8:15 a. m. Coffee, mild, bread butter, honey and apple jelly. Richard walked on deck and visited all parts of the ship while I wrote letters—one to Mother and Olive Mathhias. 11:00 a. m. At lunch, which was very good, I almost forgot that part of it was French. The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Tuesday, March 25 Dakar, Senegal Africa 8:15 a.m. Breakfast of coffee with French bread & butter. Walked to the American Consulate after coffee and waited an hour but Mr. Boyle did not come. We talked to his chief clerk about getting our trunks. They export yearly half a million tons of peanuts. I have never seen such piles of peanuts as there are around the docks. Piled right out in the open. “What if it should rain?” 12:00 noon. Big breakfast was a very poor one except a baked egg. There were two other men in our compartment besides my husband, but I slept just the same. These African sleepers are anything but private. Pajamas are the style! [The] two men wore theirs all day yesterday. 11:00 a.m. Arrived in Dakar and found our reservation at the Majestic Hotel waiting for us. The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Friday, March 21, 1930 Baruako, French Sudan The net on our bed was not large enough so we did not rest very well, up at 7:30 a.m. 8:30 Mr. Luce came and took us for a drive in the station wagon to see the sights of the capitol of Sudan. We visited the hospital, Gov. mansion, zoo and large public market. 1000 white population. It is a great city. Had lunch and rested then Mr. Luce came again at 2:00 p.m. and helped us pay the hotel bill and secure our section

Mr. Frelingh called on two Englishmen and they offered us a bed. They work for an English firm called Woodius, Mr. Ezekiel and Mr. Turner were so kind to us. Mr. Platt still has not come. Richard is nervous and restless. He does not like to wait and still it is so important to see Mr. Platt. The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Wednesday, March 12, 1930 4:00 a.m. called – Breakfast and prayers over started 6:00 a.m. from Divo. 7:30 a.m. we reached Tiassale – 35 miles. Reached Abidjan 11:45 a.m. and had dinner at the Hotel de Commerce. [We were] granted an audience with the governor at 4:00 p.m. It was very successful. Mr. J.I. Birkey remained with me at the hotel while the other four gentlemen had two interviews with the governor and Wesleyan Missionary. The last named was not so satisfactory. They do not like our program for the Ivory Coast.
