If you are searching for contentment in your circumstance, then you will probably spend a lifetime looking for this. There is only one source of true contentment and that is in Jesus Christ. I have talked with many people who are trying to find this very thing. They say, “If I could only have a little bit more of this or that, or if I did not have so much trouble at home or on my job, I would be happy.†I always want to laugh a little and say, “A job will never bring happiness. It can bring many
By Dr. R. A. Forrest The president of the United States and the governor of Georgia asked that Friday, March 8, be a day of prayer. Doubtless thousands prayed, and I believe we will hear of miraculous things as a result of the request of thousands. However, not all the prayers spoken were “availing much.†The reason is found in Hebrews 11:6 where we read, “Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.†Sadly, many people today do
Editor’s Note: In 1936 during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, Richard Forrest was away from home on a “round the world†trip. Evelyn had been scheduled to travel with him but an accident—a slip on a bedroom rug—earlier that year prevented her from going. She had gone with him in 1930, but she would never have the opportunity to do this again. That one fall changed their lives forever. We have collected several of the letters he wrote to her while he was away. They are very personal, but we felt as though sharing them with you at this time
Sometimes God closes one door of service in order to open one that is far broader. This is the very reason we need to take stock of His work in our lives. If we sense Him changing our direction, we need to be willing to make that shift with Him. Most of my young life was spent longing to become a missionary to West Africa. When God prevented this from taking place, I realized I was standing at a crossroads. Would I trust Him for my future even though I did not like the idea of seeing my personal dreams
Sombody Knows You Somebody knows when your heart aches And everything seems to go wrong. Somebody knows when the shadows need Chasing away with a song. Somebody knows when you’re lonely, Tried, discouraged, and blue. Somebody wants you to know Him And to know that he dearly loves you. Somebody knows when you’re weakest, Somebody knows when you’re strong Always is waiting to help you, He watches you all the day long. Needing His friendship so holy, Needing His watch care so true, His name, they call His name Jesus He loves everyone; He loves you! —Dr. R. A. Forrest
” As I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord they God is with thee withersoever thou goest†(Joshua 1:5-9). Joshua’s source of strength and confidence in the great military campaign he was about to undertake rested in the Word of God and God’s promise of His presence. The same is truth for you today. Whatever the battle, whatever the conflict, Jesus is your strength, but you must trust Him—roll whatever complaint or
“One of Richard’s greatest tests of faith came just before he graduated from [Nyack]. One afternoon, while standing on a street corner in New York City, he saw a man who was later president of The Christian and Missionary Alliance. Richard felt definitely called by the Lord to preach and he had been looking for a place to serve after his graduation. ‘Surely,’ he reasoned, ‘if anyone can help me, this well-known preacher can.’ Therefore, he walked over and asked if the man could direct him to a church, which he might pastor. “To his amazement and chagrin, he heard
“Richard Forrest’s life was characterized by his venturing out, in faith, and without funds, whenever he has felt the Lord’s definite leading. So it was going to Bible school. “It happened that Richard had only carfare to Nyack, New York, where he felt that he had been called to get the Bible training he needed. “He swung off the train, picked up his telescope, squared his shoulders, and started up the hill to the business office of the Missionary Training Institute, where he hoped to get some help finding a job. “’Dear Lord, help me find a job. I’m willing
Editor’s note—The yellowed map of Iraq clipped out of newspaper was discovered in Mrs. Forrest’s Bible. We had no idea of its significance until we
