The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Saturday, March 8, 1930 Kaukau, Africa 7:30 a.m. This was a good opportunity to sleep a little later than usual, and the missionaries served our breakfast in our room at 8:00 a.m. Our first message from home rec’d March 6 at Mamow forwarded from Kaukau. Akapa fyafri fadio “Business is quiet—everything all right and everybody well. Be sure you have a good time and do not let matters worry you. Am very anxious to hear about Mother,” Praise the Lord for this good news. 4:00 p.m. Prayer with the missionaries for the

The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Thursday, March 6, 1930 Mamow, Africa 5:30 a.m. Breakfast at 5:45 a.m. so as to get an early start for Delebar the Rest Home. We planned to start at 6:00 a.m. but had a little trouble with the car so did not get off until 7:00 a.m. and reached here at 9:00 having stopped for ten minutes on the way to cool the engine. Richard arrived from Lolly at 12:00 and we all had dinner together. Then Richard, Mr. Ellenbuger, William, and Sallie Botham climbed to the top of the hill, two

The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Tuesday, March 4, 1930 Conakry, Africa 5:00 a.m. We are up dressing ready for our trip up country. 6:30 a.m. On the train and moving out of the station. The scenery is beautiful. Coconut palms, mango, and orange trees in every direction as we leave Conakry. The first few miles is level country, but soon we are in the hills, mountains in every direction all the way from Conakry to Mamou—a distance of about 180 miles. We travel through the mountains. Mr. Roseberry, Ruth his little daughter Helen Luce, Miss Geigler, and

The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Sunday, March 2 After breakfast served in our room, the day was spent in quiet meditation. This is the enemy’s territory; no one seems to know it is the Lord’s Day. We took a ride out along the beach in a push-push and watched the waves and praised God for a Christian country. I am feeling much stronger tonight and trust I will soon feel perfectly well. Retired early to be ready for a busy day tomorrow getting ready for our long ride on the train Tuesday. ———————————————— Monday, March 3 Conakry,

February 28 & March 1, 1930

The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Friday, February 28, 1930 When I first awoke the sun was up but Richard was fast asleep. Praise God for strength enough to be the first one out of bed. Our breakfast was served in the room at 8:30 a.m. Soft boiled eggs, toast, coffee and milk. While Richard bathed and dressed, I lay down again and overslept so my lunch had to be received in my cabin. My morning trip down the corridor was successful. Richard went down alone to lunch. After my hot bath and tea, I feel a little

The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Wednesday, February 26, 1930 Off the coast of Africa Breakfast in our cabin as usual. Soft boiled eggs, toast, and coffee. I dressed after breakfast while Richard was walking out on deck. Went down stairs with him to lunch today. I did not try to go up on deck for we must pack the trunks this afternoon with the things we will not need while in Africa and have them ready to store at Dakar. It was quite a task to decide what things we needed and could carry and which must

The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Monday, February 24, 1930 On the Atlantic 8:30 a.m. — This is the one meal we both enjoy because we have soft boiled eggs, toast, and coffee. Richard fixes my egg English style; we eat them out of the shell. After breakfast, Richard goes out for his exercise on deck and I bathe and dress slowly. The hardest thing is getting my hair combed. It is so hard to hold both hands up at the same time. Richard is so sweet; he always tells me it looks good to him. Praise the

The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Saturday, February 22, 1930 Out on the Atlantic Just one week from today we expect to land at Conakry, Africa. Oh! What a privilege to make this trip. I must gain strength fast this next week for the traveling we will do as soon as we reach Africa. Went to the dining room for lunch today. Then spent all afternoon up on deck in our steamer chairs. I feel a little stronger. Must try to get some letters or cards written home. Guess I will wait until Monday to write. I am

With God All Things Are Possible

By Dr. R. A. Forrest The president of the United States and the governor of Georgia asked that Friday, March 8, be a day of prayer. Doubtless thousands prayed, and I believe we will hear of miraculous things as a result of the request of thousands. However, not all the prayers spoken were “availing much.” The reason is found in Hebrews 11:6 where we read, “Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.” Sadly, many people today do

Love Letters to Home

Editor’s Note: In 1936 during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, Richard Forrest was away from home on a “round the world” trip. Evelyn had been scheduled to travel with him but an accident—a slip on a bedroom rug—earlier that year prevented her from going. She had gone with him in 1930, but she would never have the opportunity to do this again. That one fall changed their lives forever. We have collected several of the letters he wrote to her while he was away. They are very personal, but we felt as though sharing them with you at this time
