Walked to the American Consulate after coffee and waited an hour but Mr. Boyle did not come. We talked to his chief clerk about getting our trunks. They export yearly half a million tons of peanuts. I have never seen such piles of peanuts as there are around the docks. Piled right out in the open. “What if it should rain?” 12:00 noon. Big breakfast was a very poor one except a baked egg. There were two other men in our compartment besides my husband, but I slept just the same. These African sleepers are anything but private. Pajamas are the style! We visited the hospital, Gov. mansion, zoo and large public market. 1000 white population. It is a great city. Mr. Frelingh called on two Englishmen and they offered us a bed. They work for an English firm called Woodius, Mr. Ezekiel and Mr. Turner were so kind to us. The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Wednesday, March 12, 1930 4:00 a.m. called – Breakfast and prayers over started 6:00 a.m. from Divo. 7:30 a.m. we reached Tiassale – 35 miles. Reached Abidjan 11:45 a.m. and had dinner at the Hotel de Commerce. [We were] granted an audience with the governor at 4:00 p.m. It was very successful. Mr. J.I. Birkey remained with me at the hotel while the other four gentlemen had two interviews with the governor and Wesleyan Missionary. The last named was not so satisfactory.
