The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine
Sunday, April 27, 1930
Naples, Italy

5:40 a.m. So glad to get up early for we are near Italy and expect to reach Naples by 7:30 a.m. A heavy fog retarded our progress and we did not land until after eight. Through customs without any trouble and took the bus for the Grand Hotel. Oh! What a contrast, a hot bath surely feels good. Rested all morning. After church we took a drive around the city. Such narrow dingy streets dirt and poverty everywhere but the King’s Palace occupies a whole block. Had dinner in our room Richard wrote some letters and I wrote in my little book did not get all the way to Galilee and back but I will finish it tomorrow.

Breakfast in our room. I decided to remain at the hotel and enjoy Vesurius from a distance while Richard took the trip to the top to look into the fiery bowels of the giant volcano and see Pompeii on the way back to Napes. Richard started [out at] 8:00 a.m. and I went back to bed to read and rest. Had a good bath and fixed my nails. Did some washing and wrote some letters and cards.

Richard returned about six o’clock tired, cold and sick. He told me all about the trip as he rested then took a hot bath and went to bed with a bad headache and fever. I prayed for him and he dropped off to sleep in a little while. I packed for we leave Naples at 9:30 a.m. in the morning.
