The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Monday April 21, 1930 Beer-Sheba 6:00 a.m. Up and almost ready for breakfast, started home twenty minutes past seven. Aside from the cold it was a wonderful drive home through the fields of waving, golden wheat and barley. The hired hands are busy reaping in the ancient way with the sickles and transporting the golden sheaves to the threshing floor on the backs of camels. Could not take a picture for we had used our last film. At Hebron we visited Abraham’s grave in the Cave of Macphela. A Mohammed Mosque is

The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Sunday April 20, 1930 Easter — Jerusalem Awake at daylight on this most important day of our trip. (5:30 a. m.) Up and ready to start for the service in the Garden Tomb. (7:00 a.m.) Mr. Smalley conducted the service and Richard gave the message. He spoke with great liberty and a fresh anointing. A large crowd had gathered to worship the living Christ. “He is not here, He is risen!” After the service we had breakfast and then prepared for the 11 o’clock service in the American Church. Richard preached again

The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Saturday, April 19, 1930 Jerusalem We both dressed for breakfast this morning but I rested and straightened out our clothes. Richard and Miss Butterfield visited the Temple area, including the Mosque of Omar the Mosque of Aksa and Solomon’s stables and was introduced to the head of all the Moslems in Palestine. In the afternoon while Richard prepared for the services tomorrow, I went with Miss Butterfield and Miss Shimp to see some new Jewish colonies. On the right high up on a Mt., we saw Nebi Samueil the burial place of

The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Thursday, April 17, 1930 Madaba, Transjordan 5:00 a. m. Editor’s note: Notice that Mrs. Forrest writes, “the tomb of Moses.” She was aware God buried Moses as is written in (Deuteronomy 34). However, the people of Israel were known for “marking” places of remembrances. We had to start back to Jerusalem early for the Mohammedan parade back from the tomb of Moses will entirely block the Jericho road by 12:00 o’clock. The ride home was uneventful except for a little engine trouble, which was soon adjusted. The car was entirely without brakes

The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Wednesday, April 16, 1930 Arrived in Jerusalem 10:30 a.m. On the train—speeding through Palestine. What a night has just passed. So glad to see the light of day and know that in a few hours we will be in Jerusalem. Everything and everybody was covered with dust. There was just one place for everyone to wash, and it is such a dirty, dingy place. . . . We have just passed through Gaza where Sampson walked off with the gates of the city. My husband announced as I returned from the washroom,

The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Saturday, April 12, 1930 Mediterranean Sea S. S. Champollion 9:30 a.m. Breakfast in cabin. Dad slept so sweetly until it was ready. Then I washed his face and hands, put on his slippers and robe and we were ready to eat. The sea is calm as a mill pond and blue as my dress. If we just knew all was well at home I would like to sail on for another week. Wrote some letters and cards so they would be ready to mail soon as we land, but saved most of

The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Thursday, April 10 Mediterranean Sea Champollion 9:00 a.m. Breakfast in our cabin. This is certainly restful not to have to dress until after you have had your coffee. Cold is better today am so glad we came on instead of going home from Marseilles. Passed close to the Island of Malta immediately after lunch today. This is a very historic Island. (Acts 27-28) It now belongs to England. Here the Crusaders had their headquarters while making a water attack on Jerusalem. Napoleon stopped here when pursued by the English Fleet, who supposing

The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Tuesday, April 8, 1930 Marseilles, France Richard arose and put up the shades saying, “It is daylight and must be 7:00 o’ clock; time to get up. It was just 5:10 a.m. I slept a little more and he finally went to sleep. I was up and partly dressed before he awoke. 8:00 a.m. Had a good breakfast in our room. Richard went to mail the films while I packed. 10:15 a.m. We left the hotel and our beautiful rose room in a taxi . . . . Yes, they are going

The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine Saturday, April 5, 1930 Marseilles, France Richard did not sleep very well during the night. He was trying so hard to decide what to do about going on to Jerusalem. He awoke me early asking me what I wanted to do? If I consulted my feeling I would certainly say, “Home James!” It does seem too bad to be this near and not go on. I had two oranges and a glass of Vicby water for breakfast. Richard and Mr. Dowelly went down the street for breakfast, and did not get back

The Diary of Evelyn Forrest’s Trip to Palestine April 4, 1930 Mediterranean Sea It all seems like a dream that we are really on the sea, which we have longed to sail for so many years. It rained during the night and the sea was pretty rough, and she is still rolling plenty. They tell us it will be 2:00 p. m. before we reach Marseilles, France. I really wish we were about to pull into New York harbor but since that is not possible today, I am thankful to be so near Europe and a comfortable bed. In the
