Beauty for Ashes

Time to Remember YEARS AGO I read the story of Dr. David Fant who gave Dr. Forrest this pointed reminder—“Every time you hear the train whistle blow as the train comes over the trestle near the college, remember that I am praying for the college.” This story so impressed me that I determined whenever I heard a train whistle blow, wherever I was, I would take that as a cue to praise God for what He was doing at Toccoa Falls. I continue that practice to this day. Using a “trigger” to remind one of a particular thing is a

The Center of God’s Will After the Haddock Inn fire, Richard Forrest asked several of his closest friends what they thought about the school’s future. This can be a display of extreme wisdom—seeking the counsel of others—especially if those we ask are interested in God’s will and not just in giving us their opinion. Most of us know by now that Sarah Staley’s first comment was, “Of course, we’ll go on. We can’t stop. The Lord called us to do this work.” Others were not so sure. Some of the faculty voiced their concern saying they “could not see how

A Jubilant Man of God DR. R.A. FORREST WAS a college president never to be forgotten, a leader with an unmistakable touch of God upon his life. I met Dr. Forrest in 1951. He invited my wife and I to join the faculty at Toccoa Falls, while completing a missions program to satisfy an appointment for ministry in South America. Dr. Forrest had a global concern for reaching needy people with the gospel of Christ and a determination to prepare young people academically and spiritually to fulfill such a commitment. His daily life was a steppingstone over which others trod

Wondrous Grace A WOMAN STOPPED to shake hands with me as she left church one Sunday. I had preached on the subject of God’s grace, and she was puzzled as she whispered softly, “Does God really forgive us—of all our sins?” “Yes,” I replied without hesitation, “each and every one.” Her eyes welled up with tears, and I knew at some point she had faced a very deep hurt or trial. No doubt someone reading this may have wondered, “How could God possibly forgive me after what I have done?” “Even if He does forgive, surely, He will not bless

Grace in the Time of Need HEBREWS 4:6 INVITES US to come boldly before the throne of God with our petition. In coming boldly, we come with full confidence. It doesn’t mean that we come in a haughty manner or a demanding attitude. It means we can “pour it all out.” There is nothing we need to hold back. He understands. We do not need to fear that He will misunderstand what we say. No, we can just “pour it all out.” Many times people who are dear to us may misunderstand what we are trying to say. The Lord,

God’s Assignments When Dr. Forrest began to recognize the need for a school to prepare young men and women to serve God, he expected God to raise someone else up for the task and was even praying to that end. But, as we read the history of events in Achieving the Impossible with God, God used someone to challenge him to accept the task. Many times, God assigns us to certain tasks in life. Some are for a season, some come into our lives suddenly, some bring great joy, others do not. Some are not what we would have chosen

Songs in the Night MUSIC IS UNIQUELY revealed in every culture to demonstrate a wide range of emotions; to promote comfort, healing, and relaxation. Music also played a major role in the lives and cultures of many Biblical characters such as Job, David, Paul, and Silas who exemplified joy in adversity by songs of praise in their nights. Upon arrival from Africa to New York City to begin our year of home assignment, our first priority was a physical exam with the mission doctor. From there we were immediately sent to the New York City Hospital for further tests. The

Discovering God’s Potential Have you ever wondered if God can use you? At some point, most of us have. We sigh, “Lord, there is no way I can serve you. I’m not talented, bright, gifted, or educated.” Placing limitations on God’s ability is never wise. It prevents Him from doing what He does best: the impossible. He planted this same ideal in the hearts and minds of Dr. and Mrs. Forrest. Along the way, they met many people, who for one reason or another felt their lives would never count. Poverty, sin, and a lack of desire had stolen their

The Sun Never Sets! God sometimes closes one door in order to open a far wider field of service. Such was the case in the lives of Richard and Evelyn Forrest, and at some point, it also may be true for you. Before she married Richard, Evelyn sensed the Lord calling her to become a missionary to French West Africa. Richard, however, felt the Lord was leading him to Brazil. While the Christian and Missionary Alliance mission board approved for her to be a missionary, they denied Evelyn’s request to go to Africa saying her ongoing battle with asthma was
